Neurodiversity Affirming Practice

Free to Be Me Speech Therapy holds space committed to embracing and celebrating neurodiversity! It is rooted in a profound commitment to inclusion and acceptance, recognising and honouring the diverse ways in which people experience and interact with the world. What is Neurodiversity Affirming Practice? Neurodiversity Affirming Practice is an approach that acknowledges and respects the natural variations in the differences in brains - all brains are beautiful. It upholds the neurodiversity paradigm which values neurodivergent conditions such as Autism, ADHD, developmental language disorder (DLD), dyscalculia, dyslexia, OCD and Tourette syndrome as natural variances in human neurocognitive function and the harm of considering them with a pathological lens. Instead of viewing neurological differences as deficits or disorders, we celebrate them as unique aspects of human diversity. This perspective encourages us to see the strengths and potentials in every individual, fostering an environment where everyone can thrive.

Neurodiversity Affirming Practice Framework

The Neurodiversity Affirming Practice framework is built on the following core principles:

1. Inclusion

We strive to create spaces where all individuals feel valued and included. Our practice actively works to remove barriers that prevent participation and belonging, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their neurological makeup, has equal opportunities to contribute and succeed.

2. Acceptance

Acceptance is at the heart of our philosophy. We believe in embracing individuals as they are, without attempting to change or "normalise" their neurological differences. This acceptance promotes self-esteem and mental well-being, encouraging people to be their authentic selves.

3. Strengths-Based Approach

We focus on identifying and building upon the unique strengths and talents of each individual. By recognising and nurturing these strengths, we empower individuals to achieve their full potential and lead fulfilling lives.

4. Collaboration

Our practice values collaboration and partnership with neurodivergent individuals, their loved one, and the wider community. We listen to and incorporate their voices and perspectives to ensure that our services are relevant, effective, and respectful of their needs and aspirations.

5. Education and Advocacy

We are dedicated to educating the broader community about neurodiversity and advocating for systemic changes that support neurodivergent individuals. Through outreach, training, and advocacy, we aim to foster a society that is more understanding, accepting, and supportive of neurodiversity.
